National Museum of the United States Air Force

Ohio has some fantastic field trip destinations! This past week we also stopped by the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.

We only had two hours to explore this amazing museum, but since admission was free, we figured we'd see what we could, and come back again, at some later time. Two hours didn't even scratch the surface.

Open daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day
FREE admission!

The shuttle buses to the Presidential and Research And Development Galleries operate on the following schedule: Registered participants meet at 1:30 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. Thursday and Friday and at 9:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for a briefing and shuttle bus ride to the galleries. Please allow an hour and 30 minutes to participate.

(Note: Bus schedule is subject to change based on staff availability.)

For those with base access, the galleries will be open from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday-Sunday (use Gate 19B).

It is a huge area, divided into several exhibits:

Early Years Gallery
World War II Gallery
Korean War Gallery
Southeast Asia War Gallery
Cold War Gallery
Missile And Space Gallery
Presidential Gallery
Research And Development Gallery
Other Exhibits
Air Park
Memorial Park

The National Museum of the United States Air Force galleries present military aviation history, boasting more than 360 aerospace vehicles and missiles on display -- many rare and one-of-a-kind -- along with thousands of historical items and powerful sensory exhibits that bring history to life and connect the Wright brothers' legacy with today's stealth and precision technology. (From their website.)
The Presidential Gallery was not open when we were there, and since our two hours wasn't nearly enough time to explore the museum, we will be going back, hopefully later this year. Turns out you'll need an ID (foreigners will need a passport) to go see the Presidential Gallery (!). Read more here.

Lots of information, lots of planes, lots of history. Free admission! Another must-see destination when in Ohio!

To make our exciting day even more exciting was stopping by our friends' house. The J family traveled with us to China to adopt their youngest daughter (on left). It was so good to see them again, and catch up for a little while!
