FPEA 2015 Homeschool Convention

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

We just got back from FPEA homeschool convention in Orlando. We had a fantastic weekend. Here are some of our highlights in a random order.

1) We met up with Mr. D! He has become one of our homeschool heroes with his high school math curriculum! I honestly wanted to go grab the loud speaker and tell everyone to go stop by Mr. D's booth! All four of my high schoolers had a fantastic year of Geometry last year, and they are signing up for the summer Algebra II course! Yes! They want to**. If you are not familiar with Mr. D Math, make sure check it out here. (We also enjoyed meeting Mrs. D, and the mini D's:)

** Mr A is not sure - he is still working on finishing 10th grade, and going on a mission's trip this summer, but we are thinking he'll start the class, and if it's too much, he can do it over the fall. Ironically Mr A is missing from the picture, because he was working on his final Geometry exam!

2) This year's Keynote speakers were excellent! We really enjoyed meeting Megan and Steve Scheibner (and some of their eight children) from Characterhealth. Steve shared from his 911 story In My Seat, and I attended Megan's session on finding our children's (and our own) God-stories. Both sessions I laughed and cried.

The Scheibners are passionate about American families, and have a variety of helpful tools to have healthy marriages and families. They have a strong desire to equip today’s parents to raise the next generation of character healthy leaders. You can sign up for email tips, and find their blogs, videos and online store here.

3) We had many great conversations, and enjoyed meeting and visiting with vendors and companies who were exhibiting. The Captain and I met Mary Prather from Homegrown Learners! We've been online friends for many years, and it was so nice to finally meet in person. Her blog is a wonderful resource for homeschoolers, and for those considering homeschooling.

We stopped by the Alpha Omega Publications booth to meet up with old friends. While we aren't using AOP Monarch this year, we will always be grateful for AOP, and friends who directed us to their curriculum (SOS first year). We would not be homeschooling if it wasn't for their material. It served us so well for many years.

One of my highlights was meeting Sarita Holzmann from Sonlight. Little Miss and I have so loved using Core B this past year, the books we have read have become favorites, and it has been such a great fit for us overall. For the teens, too! It was an honor to meet the co-founder of Sonlight, and hear her speak. Such a wonderful, godly lady!

4) Having the convention at the beautiful Gaylord Palms is always a treat. The kids love the outdoor waterpark, the beautiful atrium and fort with turtles and alligators, and having many friends (new and old!) to hang out with!

5) Little Miss lost another tooth while at the convention! She has a way of losing teeth anywhere, but home:)

6) And after the convention we met dear friends for lunch at Celebration. It was a perfect way to end our weekend away!

Thank you, FPEA, for another fantastic convention!

Vietimme viikonlopun kotikoulukonferenssissa. Oli todella mukava reissu. Hyviä puhujia, paljon materiaalia ja informaatiota, uusia ja vanhoja ystäviä, ja loistava hotelli, missä konferenssi pidettiin. Kotiinlähtiessä vielä treffasimme New Hampshiren aikaiset ystävämme lounaalla. Onnistunut viikonloppu!

Field Trip Week/Luokkaretkiviikko

Recap1,2 Recap1,2

What a week!!! I think we gave a whole new meaning to the term "homeschooling" this week. We were barely home! It was a fantastic week of learning, fun and friends. {And this week we will sleep.}

On Monday we met friends at Legoland, and despite the doubting expressions on the first photo, it was a great day. We had never been to Legoland before despite the boys being huge lego fans when they were younger (I can't believe that phase is pretty much over now - they built with legos for years..). At regular prices our family would have had to pay close to $550 for one day, not including the water park admission. Yikes! Thankfully Legoland has homeschool days, so we paid $86 for the whole day (for the six of us - the Captain had to work). And that included parking, and a locker rental, since we brought our own lunch and drinks. Score!!

We knew the park is geared toward younger kids, so having that expectation helped everyone have a good time. The boys explored the park on their own all day. We (us girls) hang out with friends some, explored the park on our own some, and Little Miss and I ended up taking a wild roller coaster ride, too. Terrible! Whee!!!!

Missy wasn't feeling well, so we ended up leaving early. Still, what a fun, full, exhausting day, lol.

Recap3,4 Recap3,4

Tuesday
we recovered from our Legoland day. I was so tired Little Miss ended up doing most of her school on mama's bed. Of course we had to go swim for PE.

Recap5,6 Recap5,6

On Wednesday morning we were able to get school work done, too. After lunch Little Miss and I dropped two boys off at film making class, and did not only one, but two field trips during class!

We first visited Sunken Gardens, talked to the birds, saw flamingos, enjoyed the lush gardens, until we saw a snake freely roaming around, and then decided to go visit Great Explorations children's museum. No pictures from there, but we had a great time playing, and actually plan to go back next week.

On Wednesday our teens also attended youth group, and the Captain, Little Miss and I attended Prayer and Praise service at church.

recap7,8,9 recap7,8,9 recap7,8,9

Thursday morning we packed up our crew again, and headed to Tampa. Florida Aquarium had a $5 homeschool day, so naturally we had to take advantage of that (normally around $20/ticket). Met a lot of homeschool friends there, too.

It was well done, there were tanks with sharks, sting rays, and all kinds of various sea creatures, but they also had a Wetlands Trail, exhibiting native fish, snakes, alligators, turtles and river otters that live in Florida's freshwater rivers and swamps.

Recap10,11

Fridays are are homeschool co-op days. We get up early, and enjoy beautiful sunrise colors as we drive to our church for classes.

This Friday I attended a class, also. Information on dual enrollment - high school and college for high school years. A lot of great info, a lot to digest. The Captain and I went on a date to go over some of our options. Would we need to settle down for a bit, or will we find a way to continue our travels, and still do dual enrollment? Praying for wisdom..

Recap10,11

By Saturday morning I was ready to hibernate a month, but dragged myself out of bed. We had decided to go back to Clearwater Marine Aquarium to see Winter, before CMA closes for filming of the sequal.

So glad we went!

Since our last time, they have had changes: Panama passed away, and Winter and Hope were moved to different tanks (maybe their older ones, now remodeled?). You could see them so much better now. We happened to be there during training, which was very fascinating. Here is a short video.

Recap12,13

In the first photo Winter doesn't have her prosthesis, but in this middle one she is having a training session with her prosthetic tail. You can see a video clip here.

Recap12,13

And in this last photo her tail is off again, and she is given a reward of fish - not herring though, we learned she really doesn't care for herring:)

The Captain and Mr. A joined Little Miss and I this time. We did the behind the scenes tour, again. What a great place!

After CMA we headed to church for Saturday night worship service. Today, Sunday, we have already been to the beach, and once I hit 'publish', we'll head back out there for a second swim! Having a quiet day feels so good after such a busy week.

*********************************************************************************

Meillä on todella aktiivinen viikko takana. Ensi viikolla nukutaan:)

Year 2012 Recap

Last year I did a quick recap of Year 2011, and decided I wanted to do it again, this year. But, whoa, Year 2012 was a very busy year for us. We loved it, but wouldn't mind if 2013 was a bit quieter, heh heh... All in all, it was a great year!

JANUARY

Early January found us in Maine and in Virginia
. The Captain, and two children left Florida to prepare our little cabin for our family in Maine, and to oversee renovations on our Maine camp. I took three children with me, and visited my sister in Virginia for good part of January.

Homeschooling with AOP Monarch allowed our teens to work on school wherever they were. I would check their schoolwork online, and we'd communicate via email and phone calls. Little Miss did a lot of Kindergarten work in Virginia with her cousin. Missy started dance lessons in Maine, both tap and jazz.

Once we were all together again in Maine, we played in the snow a lot. After all, all of us squeezing into our little cabin felt quite claustrophobic! But, we kept telling ourselves: we had more room than in our Mothership motorhome... Laundry was done at the town laundromat - not fun. Our fridge was smaller than the one in our RV, and the town only had a small grocery store. Definitely challenging (three or so months). (I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me! Phil. 4:13 - was very true!)

We also celebrated Captain's Grandmother's 95th birthday with family. Happy Birthday, Nanny!!

At the end of the month we took our first snowmobile ride of the year.

FEBRUARY

We were outside a lot! Snowmobiling, skiing, sledding and cross-country skiing. While the rest of the country was lacking in snow, we had enough for us. I wrote two articles on snowmobiling, you can read them here and here.

We had a quiet month, no travels for us in February, but we got a lot of homeschooling done. One of our favorite science experiments was frozen bubbles. Camp renovations continued on. We survived The Stomach Plague of the year without a washing machine, and having very limited bathroom facilities. Yuck.

MARCH

In March we managed to squeeze in a trip, doctors visits, school and play. Towards the end of the month we started getting mud. And the lake started showing signs of thawing. Still working on our camp, too - which didn't help in the mud department (all the vehicles in and out of our driveway).

For play we did snowshoeing, skiing, snowmobiling, and waterskiing (yes, check it out!). As a homeschool science experiment we ate snow, and we celebrated Little Miss' 6th birthday!

Things got very interesting when I slipped on ice, and dislocated my shoulder. All dish duty (no dishwasher in our cabin) and various other mama jobs landed on our teens' shoulders. Literally.

The Captain and I had a lovely trip to Dallas on business. Dislocated shoulder, and all.

APRIL

Big news!!! Snow started melting, which meant ice out - which meant swimming, yay! Brrr, lol!! Also, True Mud Season started, March was nothing compared to April's mud. The town pretty much closed also, including the laundromat, but fortunately our camp had a working washing machine for part of the month.

Huge progress in camp renovations, and my mom came to visit from Finland. We had hoped to be in Florida by now, but due to camp progress couldn't. But it was very exciting to see the ice disappear on lake.

Missy's dance school had recitals, and she was able to attend last classes, and the recital (the recital link also includes a spring homeschool update). We spent Easter weekend at our camp, and visiting Captain's parents and family in southern Maine.

MAY

Spring tends to be complicated for us, and this year was no exception. Since my mom was staying with us in Maine (working, working, working on our camp clean-up), Captain and I flew to Virginia for a mini visit with my sister's family. They had graciously hosted some of our furniture (don't ask) in their garage, so we finally went there, rented a U-haul, and brought it all up, bringing kitchen appliances up at the same time.

We worked hard on the camp to be able to bring the furniture in, and actually started moving into the rooms that were ready.

Middle of May we all left our camp, my mom flew to my sister's house, Captain went on a men's retreat, and the kids and I spent some time in New Hampshire with friends (even traveled down Memory Lane - aka our old road, sniff). Once the Captain got back, our family flew to Florida, where our Mothership motorhome awaited for us.

We attended FPEA homeschool conference in Orlando, which was a fantastic experience!!! During the conference Missy got glasses!

We had a lovely time in Florida, visiting some of our favorite spots.

JUNE

Part of the first week of June we had a vacation on the beach, in our Mothership. It was glorious. I think we did a little school, a lot of beach, and a lot of rest, which was great after such a hectic May. After that, we spent three days at Disney Wilderness Campground, but didn't go to any of the parks. We met with our New Hampshire friends at Downtown Disney for a dinner together, then started driving North.

We stopped in Virginia for about two days to see my sister and her family, which is always special. I wasn't able to do a lot of blogging on the road, but posted this twitter feed of our travels.

On our way up North we stopped in Pennsylvania, and toured Hershey Chocolate Factory. Which was super lame (fortunately free!), but at least their factory outlet store had some great deals on chocolate, yum!

Our next stop for a couple of days was New Hampshire. Great time with friends!

Our second to last stop on this trip was Grandma and Grandpa's house. We stored the Mothership in their barn for the summer months this year, and spent Father's day organizing, packing and cleaning. The same night we continued on, and made it back to our camp, finally.

We spent a week or so at our camp, had friends visit us from Kansas, and really enjoyed the cooler summer temps up North.

We still worked on homeschool, as during travels we didn't always have reliable internet.

JULY

One of July's highlights was our annual trip to Nantucket for 4th of July. It is time with Captain's family, and we fully engage in all of the island's fun festivities. Missy brought watermelon home again, also check year 2010 and year 2011 (year of the Nanny!!).

After Nantucket we had a few days up in Maine, before our teens headed to summer camp in New Hampshire. During camp Little Miss and I spent some time with Captain's grandmother Nanny, and Captain's sister's family.

We discovered summer in Maine is pretty sweet, too! And finally finished our homeschool year. Whew. Just in time, as Little Miss received her first grade material in the mail!

AUGUST

Our August Adventure was sailing! We found an old sailboat for our lake, and after the Captain and the boys fixed it up, they first had a dry lesson on land, before their first sail. The Captain also taught the boys how to capsize the sailboat.

While we were having summer vacation from homeschool (other than sailing aka the homeschool PE), Little Miss wanted to do some school. I think the boys' online government class started in August, also.

No travels in August!

SEPTEMBER

Mr. D broke his toe
, and spent a good part of September recovering. We stayed put for most of the month, and had guests pretty much every week (or weekend), including my sister and her family from Virginia!

We officially started homeschool fall semester, Missy started dance classes again, and Little Miss started ballet! Mr. A had saved up for a bow and arrow, and started practicing his new hobby. All boys got to try shooting, also.

We picked blueberries, and made blueberry pies. More work was done on the camp. September was beautiful in Maine! After a storm we thought we had lost the sailboat, but found evetually all pieces.

Captain and I took a quick trip to Montreal with business (pictures here and here).

OCTOBER

Fall foliage was gorgeous in Maine this year (pictures here and here)! Although we saw our first snow in early October... Nevertheless, we still had our dips in the lake. We picked apples and made apple pie.

Mr A and Mr D tried zip lining for the first time. We studied beavers after a beaver decided to munch on one of our trees.

Due to hurricane Sandy we had to delay our departure to Florida, and waited out the storm. We left Maine in our Mothership RV on Halloween night.

NOVEMBER

We drove to Pennsylvania via New Hampshire, and spent a wonderful weekend with friends near Scranton. Got exciting news: my sister's family welcomed a baby girl on the 2nd of October! We decided to visit them on our way back north, and headed straight to Florida from Pennsylvania.

We had a great time being back in the Mothership, and back in Florida! While in St. Pete, we had a fun outing to VW Bulli Brigade.

Our Florida travels took us also to Miami, Orlando for Thanksgiving, and to Florida Keys. We really enjoyed visiting Long Key, Key West and Bahia Honda State Park. And in Key West our sail on Schooner Hindu was the highlight of that whole trip to the Keys!

It was hard to leave beautiful St. Pete and Florida, but we were very antsy to see our new cousin!

DECEMBER
Another whirlwind month for us! After meeting Baby C (and my mom!) at my sister's house in Virginia, and spending a couple of days with cousins (we got to go to Christmas Town!), we said our good-byes, took my mom with us, and headed back to Pennsylvania. We had made plans to store the Mothership near Scranton, so we went back to our friends' house, organized, packed and cleaned our RV, and left it in Pennsylvania.

Sounds fairly easy, but it was nothing but. You can read more here. We needed to rent a minivan to get home, and drove straight to southern Maine. A night there, and then drove the rest of the way back to our camp. I think I'm getting old. I don't know how long I can keep up with this pace!

We had a nice Christmas, and right before Christmas we celebrated birthdays and adoption days. I loved having my mom help with preparations. When we got to Maine there was barely any snow, but since then we have gotten several snow storms. On Christmas the lake froze over, as well.

So there. A full 2012 for sure. And congratulations if you actually read this whole long post:)

Happy New Year 2013 to all my readers!! Hyvää uutta vuotta 2013 kaikille lukijoilleni!

Happy Thanksgiving From Our RV to Yours:)

Untitled
Untitled

Happy Thanksgiving to You!! Wherever you are:)

We have been invited to spend Thanksgiving with friends in Orlando, so we'll be leaving the Florida Keys today, and will slowly start making our way back north. Yes, all the way to Maine. Eventually. Not quite yet.

We'll be bringing some yummies to our friends house tomorrow, and one one of them is a new favorite. I usually make my own cranberry sauce, but tried a crockpot recipe yesterday that is soooo good. And healthy! Too bad I didn't double the batch... The recipe is from skinnyms.

I used all ingredients below, smashed the berries when I took the lid off, but I didn't cook it as long. I think my crockpot tends to heat up fast. I first cooked the berries about 3.5 hrs on low, then without the lid about an hour.

Slow Cooker Cranberry Sauce

Ingredients

1 (12 oz.) bag fresh cranberries
1/2 cup 100% orange juice (no sugar added)
1 large cinnamon stick
1/2 cup honey

Directions

Combine all ingredients in slow cooker and cook for 4-5 hours on low, or until berries are soft. Then, remove the lid and continue to cook for 2-3 more hours on high. Removing the lid is very important so the liquids can cook out. In the second half of the cooking cycle (after removing the lid), it is important to stir occasionally. (You can also smash the berries with a fork to shorten the cooking time a bit.) This keeps it from burning and allows you to check thickness. It should cook down approximately 3/4 of the way from where it started. Chill in fridge overnight to set.

**********************************************************************************

Huomenna Usassa vietetään Kiitospäivää, eli hyvää Kiitospäivää kaikille sitä juhliville:) Me olemme tänään lähdössä Florida Keys-saarilta kohti Orlandoa, jossa vietämme Kiitospäivän ystävien luona.

Mekin tuomme mukanamme eri herkkuja ateriaa varten, joista yksi on karpalohillo - kalkkunaa varten, tietenkin.

Sekoita muutaman kerran. Anna jäähtyä jääkaapissa yön yli.

Snippets from the Road/Hetkiä tien päällä

Untitled

At the moment we are settling in at a campground, but I had two more travel collages to post. The top one is from yesterday as we were filling the Mothership propane tanks (yay for hot water and heat!). We needed to step out of the motorhome during the filling, and had an impromptu homeschool roadschool PE break with red light green light game. So much fun!!! We all played:) Right there in a corner of the gas station parking lot (yes, it was safe)!

Untitled

This second collage is random pictures from yesterday as were getting homeschool done. Ok, ok, Mr. T is not doing school while on our bed - he is listening to his audio book:) And Mr. D is playing a game with Little Miss in that first pic. But we did get quite a bit of school done. And propane tanks filled, coach batteries replaced, oil changed, voting done, a rental car picked up, got to be rescued by the rental car company, groceries picked up, campground site secured... Busy, busy.

We have really been enjoying our Mothership stay. It's a bit squishy and crowded, the kitchen teeny and laundry challenging, but we love it! It is SO good to have this special family time..

Ps. Did you have a chance to vote for our blog? TY!!!

****************************************************************************

Muutama kuva vielä tien päältä. Ekassa leikitään peiliä huoltoaseman parkkipaikalla (turvallisesti) sillä välin kun asuntoauton kaasutankkeja täytettiin. Oli tosi hauskaa:) Tokassa kuvassa lähinnä koulukuvia, paitsi Mr. T makailee meidän sängyn päällä kuunnellen kirjaansa. Meillä on kivaa Mothershipissä!!

Ps. Kävitkö jo äänestämässä meidän blogia? Kiitos:)

Photos & Photos/Kuvia & kuvia

Untitled

Sooo, that blogging while on the road... Still didn't really happen. A little, but not like I'd like to. I did some updates on Twitter, and quite a few on Facebook.

And photos? All iPhone-instagram style.

First collage starts in Maine on Halloween, and ends in Pennsylvania on Friday. In one photo Mr. A is roadschooling at Books A Million, and in another the Captain is checking our coach batteries. (We've had trouble with them this trip, and plan to have them replaced tomorrow.)

Untitled

This second collage is from our friends' the M Family's house this weekend. Ten kids, four adults, and we were so outnumbered. Great times. For all. We left our car at the M's house, so we'll stop by again, on our way back north.

Untitled

This third collage is from Pennsylvania to North Carolina, taken on Sunday. Long stretches of country roads, beautiful sunsets. We didn't see any storm damage from Hurricane Sandy on our travels, but we also stayed away from coastal routes up north, and traveled late at night when it was dark. There were a lot of utility vehicles and tree crews on the highways, though. And in the corner of New York state where we needed to get gas, we had to wait in line for a while, the gas was expensive, and people were not only filling up their vehicles, they were also filling up canisters for their generators.

Untitled

This last collage is from our travels today. We started in North Carolina where it was so cold we could see our breath inside the RV, and made it to Florida tonight, where the temperatures are just perfect. Not too hot, not too cold. Aaahh, so nice! We had a great travel day, with breaks of tossing the medicine ball outside, playing games, and getting some roadschooling done as well.

Tomorrow will be a busy day of getting errands done and voting.

Speaking of which. Mothership Adventures was nominated again for best photos homeschooling blog at The Homeschool Post! Thank you so much!!! I really feel awed and humbled. I love taking pictures, but I am such an amateur, and usually I'm snapping pics with my iPhone. If you check out the Homeschool Blog Awards, you'll see our blog right there with big name blogs with amazing talented photos. Mind-boggling! This link will bring you to the general voting - great blogs there, and at this link you can check the homeschool photo blog award nominees.

One Two Three: Go vote!

You don't even have to vote for our blog ;-)

Our Disney Stop/Disney-pysäkki

Orlando

Our last stop in Florida was Orlando. We sort of did Disney the cheap way: plenty of fun on a shoe string budget. Which, believe it or not, is possible "where dreams come true" :-)

This is what we did:

- We stayed at Fort Wilderness Campground in our RV {the Mothership}

- We stocked up on food, and some special things we normally don't buy at Publix

- We ate all meals (except one) in our RV, utilizing our grill and crockpot

- Instead of amusement parks we played in the campground pool complex

- and could have watched the Chip and Dale sing-a-long show and outdoor movie, but decided to skip those because of rain (we had seen the show last time we were there, and had plenty of our own movies in the Mothership). Fort Wilderness Campground has all kinds of other activities, too, if you want to pay, so we skipped archery, boat/kayak rentals etc, but you could stay very busy and not leave the campground at all

- We had campfire s'mores (brought our own, naturally), plenty of popsicles, ice cream and slushy drinks, thanks to the freezer we brought with us ;-)

- and we spent half a day at Downtown Disney, mainly looking at things, although some of the kids spent their own money at the huge Lego store

Also, our friends from New Hampshire came down to do Disney parks for a few days, so we planned a little get-together at Downtown Disney. We all had dinner at T-Rex, which was a fun and yummy place to hang out with our friends (thanks, B family!!!).

All in all, a great way to do Disney! Especially on a super rainy week...

************************************************************************

June Twitter Travels (so far)/Tien päällä

Since June first, we have been on the road again. And I haven't blogged. This is a travel (/homeschooling/family blog). Lame. Once we get to Maine I will try to post some pics of our travels. Until then, you can follow our travels via Twitter (I can tweet from my phone, but haven't mastered blogging from my phone yet).

To catch up on June tweets, I copied and pasted them here. At the moment we are in Pennsylvania Amish country, and I will tweet along as we travel. You can see the tweets on the sidebar of our blog, or click here to follow along. I occasionally post photos and maps, too.

So, in a list of odd things I've ever done, last night is one: we slept in our in the service bay of Camping World service dept..
